Graduate Council

The role of the Graduate Council (“the Council”) is to consistently improve the quality of graduate education at Grand Canyon University. The Council serves in an advisory capacity to the Dean of the Graduate Studies and the Provost/Chief Academic Officer in ensuring consistency of standards for scholarship across all graduate programs at the University. The Council is also responsible for monitoring the alignment of program and scholarship standards of the University with generally accepted practices in academe and industry. The majority of the work of the Council is conducted through one of two standing committees:

Executive Committee: The Executive Committee is responsible for overseeing the Council, committees, and other activities related to the Graduate Council. The Executive Committee works closely with the Dean of the Graduate Studies to ensure consistency of curriculum, programs, faculty, and instruction across the University. The Executive Committee is comprised of each college’s appointed assistant/associate dean Council member.

Graduate Program Standards and Evaluation Committee (PSEC):  The Graduate PSEC is responsible for ensuring the consistency of graduate curriculum and requirements across the university. Graduate programs, after approval by the college PSEC, will be presented to the Graduate PSEC for approval. The Graduate PSEC will then present the recommended change to the Academic Affairs Committee. The Graduate PSEC is comprised of each college’s appointed faculty Council member.

The Council is comprised of two representatives from each college, the Graduate Studies Dean ex officio, up to four graduate students, one at-large member, and legal counsel.  One representative from each college must be an assistant dean or higher with direct responsibilities for graduate programs. The second member from each college must be a terminally-degreed, full-time faculty member. Up to one graduate student from each college may also be appointed at the discretion of the college dean. The at-large member is appointed by the Provost/Chief Academic Office. The Council is chaired by the Dean of the Graduate Studies. Ad hoc committees are formed as required to accomplish the work of the Council. Ad hoc committees will be chaired by a member of the Council and appointed by the dean.
